Great Southern - Systems Modelling Workshop 1 Summary

‘Right care, first time, where you live’ held its first workshop of the systems modelling phase in March 2025 with the support and collaboration of the Great Southern, Western Australia Primary Health Alliance.

The Great Southern region is a vast region located on the south coast of Western Australia, adjoining the Southern Ocean where the coast extends for approximately 250km.

People came great distances for this workshop and it was exciting to see everyone come together as a community to map out the youth mental health system of the region.

Greg Stocks the Mayor of Albany says: I think the key takeaway is that we're connecting with youth for lived experience to model up what might be the best, the better options, because there are only limited amounts of money available in health, but you can increase the bucket of money by 25%, not getting better outcomes. So this is a really important initiative to listen to youth, connect to youth, and find better ways to deliver the services.”

Lee Mickle of WAPHA says that his hope for this program is to ensure that the resources Great Southern have are used effectively, and that the resources that are available to us, we get the best out of them that we can, to make sure that young people and their mental health are served.  He believes that coming together and taking a systems approach will really help the young people of this region.

Our Brain and Mind Centre team will now take that information and transform it into a dynamic systems model that will enable optimal decision-making for the youth mental health system in the region
